Engraving in the Big Blue Saw Designer

Let's take a look at four different engraving effects you can create in the Big Blue Saw Designer.

The part we create will be a small plaque with the words "The Best Laser Cutting." We can use the text tool to enter the text, and the rectangle tool to draw the outline of the plaque. By changing the properties of the text object using the Positive/Negative Space, Engrave, and Filled toggle buttons on the toolbar, we can achieve different engraving effects.

We will start by telling the Designer that the lettering should be engraved. We select the text object with the mouse, then click on the engraving toggle button on the toolbar. The appearance of the lettering will change as shown below.

In this state, we have told the Designer that we want to engrave just the outline of the letters. Here is a photo of the resulting part created with red engravable acrylic with a white background.

Next, suppose we want the letters filled instead of just outlined. We will need to select the text object and make sure that both the Engraved and Filled buttons on the toolbar are selected.

The result will be the part shown here.

Suppose that we wanted the letters to be red instead of white. We will first need to create an engraved background on which the letters will appear. We do this by making a rectangle and setting it to be engraved using the toolbar . Next, we will enter our text and center it within the engraved rectangle. It, too, must be set to be an engraved item using the toolbar . But now turn the text into negative space by using the "Toggle Subtractive" button on the toolbar in order to make sure that the letters appear in the material's "cap" color.

On the finished part, the outline of the letters will now appear in red, on a white background.

Finally, to display the letters as solid red on a white background, toggle the text object to be "Filled".

Here is the finished part.

Updated online quoting system for 2010

Happy New Year! We have rolled out a new update to the online quoting system. Materials are now displayed in an expandable tree and are organized by category. We've also added descriptions for all of the materials.

The list of available materials has grown quite long lately: we have 77 different combinations of material and stock thickness you can choose from. There are a bunch of new materials coming soon so these changes make it easier for you to find the right material for your project.

Engravable Acrylics

Engravable acrylics make wonderful durable signs, art objects, instrument panels, picture frames, keepsakes, and whatever else you can imagine.

In each case below, the primary color or style is listed first, followed by the secondary color, that is, the color revealed when the material is engraved. The secondary color is also the color on the back of the material. These colored plastics are all made from acrylic and are opaque except for the reverse-engravable materials. All styles have a matte finish on the primary color, except as noted.

Tangerine/White: the surface of this material is rougher than the standard matte finish, which should help hide fingerprints and dirt.

Verde Green Marble/White: this plastic has the look of polished green stone, and has a glossy, rather than matte, finish.

Metallics

The metallics all have a texture similar to brushed metal. These are an excellent economical alternative to using waterjet cut metal for decorative applications and instrument panels.

Reverse-Engravable

Reverse-engravable materials have a thin colored cap of material underneath a thicker clear layer. The engraved image is intended to be viewed through the clear layer. This makes cleaning the piece very easy and the engraving extremely durable, as it is never directly exposed to the environment. The engraved areas become translucent, so parts made of reverse engraved material are excellent for backlit applications.

White/Clear: this is actually the same material as the Clear/Navy Blue above, but we reverse the image when engraving this material so that it is intended to be viewed white-side first. If you look at the back of this a part made from this material, you would see the dark navy blue color.

Clear/Black: The front surface of this material is glossy.

Woodgrain

The detail on the woodgrain designs is excellent. You have to look very carefully to tell that it's not real wood or veneer. They can be used in any project where a more earthy, natural look is desired.

Engineered Wood Products

Engineered wood products are made with wood fiber and high-strength adhesives in order to produce a material that is both strong and inexpensive. Some of our engineered wood products are laminated with natural wood to provide a product that's both beautiful and tough.

Cedar Uncoated Wood Laminate. This material has a layer of aromatic cedar on either side of a high-density fiberboard core. The cedar is sanded smooth, but is otherwise in its natural state (no clear coat or lacquer).

Birch Uncoated Wood Laminate. This material has a layer of birch on either side of a high-density fiberboard core. The birch is sanded smooth, but is otherwise in its natural state (no clear coat or lacquer).

Maple Wood Laminate with Clear Coat. This material has a layer of maple on either side of a high-density fiberboard core. The maple is sanded smooth, and has a clear coat to provide a shinier appearance and to protect the wood.

Walnut Wood Laminate with Clear Coat. This material has a layer of dark walnut on either side of a high-density fiberboard core. The walnut is sanded smooth, and has a clear coat to provide a shinier appearance and to protect the wood.

Black Wood Laminate. This material has a layer of hard semi-gloss synthetic black material either side of a high-density fiberboard core.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). An economical, strong, engineered wood product.

Hardboard. An economical, strong, engineered wood product. Darker, slightly harder, and denser than MDF, it is often perforated and sold as "pegboard".

Natural Wood

This is wood that has been cut from a tree and sanded smooth on both sides before laser machining. Some of our stock may be made from wood that has been glued edge-to-edge to make a wider piece of stock material.

Cherry. A beautiful decorative wood, this hardwood has a slightly wider grain than red oak.
Natural Wood Info.

Poplar. This is a fast-growing tree with light colored wood. The wood is fairly soft and quite pliable, making it good for projects where the wood must be formed into a curved shape.
Natural Wood Info.

Red Oak. This strong wood is harder and denser than cherry, with a finer grain.
